Objective 1 Identify candidate genes (from gene expression patterns of Populus trees growing under ambient and elevated [CO2]) for aboveground growth enhancement and shifting carbon allocation to roots.
Objective 2 Determine robust QTL for fast aboveground growth in Populus and link it to candidate genes.
Objective 3 Link EST, gene expression and QTL data with Poplar Genome Initiative to annotate and identify additional useful traits suitable for genetic manipulation of carbon sequestration.
Objective 4 Engineer superior hybrid poplar clones with stacked genes to decrease or eliminate flowering, improve growth and/or alter carbon allocation to roots.
